THE sign says 'Welcome to Mississippi: Feels like home!' A few metres behind it lies a black Ford Explorer on its roof, with its wheels spinning in the breeze.
Next to the car is a roadside billboard, its message hanging in shreds from a twisted metal frame. Those foolish enough to drive on soon come across a yacht, moored on the hard shoulder of Interstate 10.
The nearest beach is about 30km south.
