The Achilles Heel of Web 2.0. Moore's Lore:

The Achilles Heel of Web 2.0. Moore's Lore:: "It's an open secret that eBay is beset by fraud, on both sides of transactions, that Google results can be clickfrauded, that Amazon is robbed by identity thieves. These companies regularly calculate the cost of real police against the perceived benefits from better policing and keep the wallets in the pocket. We all suffer from that.

The danger is that every Web 2.0 start-up I've seen or heard of goes the same route. Computer interactions are replacing human interaction, cutting the costs of transactions. Perhaps we're cutting too deeply."

Joel Spolsky on Web 2.0: The Antihype Is Thickening. Get Real: Stowe Boyd's take on collaborative and social technology, and its impact on business and society: "People who don't get the difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 aren't idiots, but they certainly aren't out there creating and promoting Web 2.0 apps and concepts: they are commenting, looking in from afar, and reading and repeating the comments of other uninvolved, or actively hostile, watchers."

O'Reilly: The Architecture of Participation

O'Reilly: What Is Web 2.0: "One of the key lessons of the Web 2.0 era is this: Users add value. But only a small percentage of users will go to the trouble of adding value to your application via explicit means. Therefore, Web 2.0 companies set inclusive defaults for aggregating user data and building value as a side-effect of ordinary use of the application. As noted above, they build systems that get better the more people use them."

O'Reilly: What Is Web 2.0

[I believe this is a must read for just about anyone interested in where the internet is and where it is going.

O'Reilly: What Is Web 2.0: "In the year and a half since, the term 'Web 2.0' has clearly taken hold, with more than 9.5 million citations in Google. But there's still a huge amount of disagreement about just what Web 2.0 means, with some people decrying it as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as the new conventional wisdom.

This article is an attempt to clarify just what we mean by Web 2.0."

The Daily World

The Daily World: "NEW ORLEANS - With the last weary refugees rescued from the Superdome and convention center, New Orleans turned its attention Sunday to gathering up and counting the dead across a ghastly landscape awash in perhaps thousands of corpses.

No one knows how many people were killed by Hurricane Katrina and how many more succumbed waiting to be rescued. But the bodies are everywhere: hidden in attics, floating in the ruined city, crumpled in wheelchairs, abandoned on highways.

'We need to prepare the country for what's coming,' Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said on 'Fox News Sunday.' 'We are going to uncover people who died hiding in the houses, maybe got caught in floods. It is going to be as ugly a scene as you can imagine.'"

AP Wire | 09/04/2005 | Hurricane survivors must decide future: "TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - He didn't choose to leave New Orleans; Katrina came through and wrecked Jerry Hymel's native city, driving him away. And now he does not know what to do. He is asking the same questions posed by thousands of others who fled the storm and its aftermath: Should he and his wife rebuild, a long and arduous process?

Or should the retired utility worker pick up stakes, making a fresh start in a new place at age 62?

'I can't answer that right now,' he said."

Leavitt was the first federal official to give an estimate.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin predicted Sunday that there would be that many deaths in his city alone."

Another storm possible in hard-hit region

Nola.com: NewsFlash - Another storm possible in hard-hit region: "(AP) — Katrina may seem like the last word in hurricanes, but there is a very real possibility that another major hurricane may hit New Orleans or some other portion of the 200-mile coastline devastated by Katrina in the weeks to come.

'We're not out of the woods yet,' said Susan Cutter, director of the University of South Carolina Hazards Research Laboratory. 'We're not even in the height of hurricane season.'

A forecast released Friday by meteorologists at Colorado State University calls for six more hurricanes by the time the hurricane season ends on Nov. 30, three of them Category 3 or above. On average, about one major hurricane in three makes landfall in the United States.

'We expect that by the time the 2005 hurricane season is over, we will witness tropical cyclone activity at near record levels,' the Colorado State meteorologists wrote."

240 blog posts in 50 hours

Well, It's been about 50 hours since I began logging all the katrina related URLs posted on the various #interdictor IRC channels and I stop to check. I've posted 241 posts in just over 50 hours. There were many more links which, after I checked them out, were either not related to Katrina or duplicates. What a 2 day run. That's about 5 blog entries an hour. Blogger challenged me 2 times in that time to insure I wasn't a spammer (which I thought was funny).

Anyway. Just taking stock.

In summary, things were REALLY bad this last week, but the last 24 hours have been nothing like the first 24 hours, so things are clearly getting better, relative to the absolute hell that has been going on.

I hope everyone reading these blog entries understand that well over 200 people contributed these links, I was just blogging them as quickly as I could see and verify they were 'on topic'.

I believe I can honestly call myself a blogger now. All you bloggers out there who call this old hat, my hat is off to you.

... Ok, back to work.

Afew minutes later, she stopped shaking. And yet, in that hell, Anita Roach raised her voice to the heavens, belting out the gospel standards that had comforted her since childhood: through homelessness, through friendlessness, through the death of her son and through the flood that nearly killed her and her husband in their Lower 9th Ward home.

Help Rescue Officials Locate Survivors

As many
of you have likely observed, the national media outlets are suggesting
that hurricane relief is finally leading to vast improvements with each
hour that passes. Food and water are being delivered, power restored,
levees repaired, water drainage plans developed, and those still living
successfully evacuated. Many are reporting that the final areas are
being checked for survivors, as well as those who have passed at the
hands of Katrina (and more often, neglect). Unfortunately, this is not
the case. As demonstrated on nola.com's blog section, many individuals
know the exact locations and WORKING telephone numbers of family
members, most of whom are elderly, sickly, starving, and in serious
need of medical attention. When able to get through on emergency
telephone numbers, a feat not to be taken lightly, they are dismissed
or told that dispatch would be sent immediately, yet no one has come,
even though calls have been placed for days. Many do not require full
evacuation, but basic medical attention and/or supplies. Many are
completely immobile, and unable to access the limited relief sites or
food drops.

Left Turn: Notes from the Global Intifada

Left Turn: Notes from the Global Intifada: "In the refugee camp I just left, on the I-10 freeway near Causeway, thousands of people (at least 90% black and poor) stood and squatted in mud and trash behind metal barricades, under an unforgiving sun, with heavily armed soldiers standing guard over them. When a bus would come through, it would stop at a random spot, state police would open a gap in one of the barricades, and people would rush for the bus, with no information given about where the bus was going. Once inside (we were told) evacuees would be told where the bus was taking them - Baton Rouge, Houston, Arkansas, Dallas, or other locations. I was told that if you boarded a bus bound for Arkansas (for example), even people with family and a place to stay in Baton Rouge would not be allowed to get out of the bus as it passed through Baton Rouge.

You had no choice but to go to the shelter in Arkansas. If you had people willing to come to New Orleans to pick you up, they could not come within 17 miles of the camp.

Levees' Fate Sealed in Washington - Los Angeles Times

Levees' Fate Sealed in Washington - Los Angeles Times: "WASHINGTON -- For years, Washington had been warned that doom lurked just beyond the levee. And for years, the White House and Congress had dickered over how much money to put into shoring up century-old dikes and carrying out newer flood control projects to protect the city of New Orleans.

As recently as three months ago, the alarms were still sounding -- and still being brushed aside.

In late May, the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers formally notified Washington that hurricane storm surges could knock out two of the big pumping stations that must operate night and day even in normal times to keep the city dry.

Also, the Corps said, several levees had 'settled' and would soon need to be raised. And they reminded Washington again that an ambitious flood-control study proposed four years before remained just that -- a written proposal never begun for lack of funding."

Guardsmen 'played cards' amid New Orleans chaos: police official - Yahoo! News: "NEW ORLEANS, United States (AFP) - A top New Orleans police officer said that National Guard troops sat around playing cards while people died in the stricken city after Hurricane Katrina.

New Orleans deputy police commander W.S. Riley launched a bitter attack on the federal response to the disaster though he praised the way the evacuation was eventually handled.

His remarks fuelled controversy over the government's handling of events during five days when New Orleans succumbed to lawlessness after Katrina swamped the city's flood defenses.

The National Guard commander, Lieutenant General Steven Blum, said the reservist force was slow to move troops into New Orleans because it did not anticipate the collapse of the city's police force."

City must overcome disaster, mayor says

NOLA.com: Times-Picayune Breaking News Weblog: "Viewed from the windows of a low-flying Blackhawk helicopter, the scope of Hurricane Katrina's destruction becomes clearer. The Causeway is like a broken spine, large sections of roadway listing disconcertingly into the brown water of Lake Pontchartrain. The modest homes in the Lower 9th Ward have been uprooted and are crushed together in clots like bumper cars. Pyramid-shaped rooftops are all that can be seen of many suburban-style houses in the Lakeview neighborhood. And the expanses of small trees that line the coastal wetlands of eastern New Orleans have been bent to the ground and combed precisely in one direction that marks the path of last week's ferocious wind. Nothing is right. "

Frustration about the federal response to Hurricane Katrina has reached Chicago City Hall, as Mayor Richard Daley today noted a tepid response by federal officials to the city's offers of disaster aid.

The city is willing to send hundreds of personnel, including firefighters and police, and dozens of vehicles to assist on the storm-battered Gulf Coast, but so far the Federal Emergency Management Agency has requested only a single tank truck, Daley said.

'I was shocked,' he said.

Just to give you a sense of just how badly FEMA has f*cked up. | WesPac | Securing America Community

This is beyond my comprehension and after spending two frustrating days trying to just get someone to let us help we've FINNALLY been told we can conduct 'renegade' boat rescues via the just concluded press conference that Gov. Blanco just held.

Why is this JUST NOW being allowed? Well let's start from the very beginning.

On Wednesday morning a group of approximately 1,000 citizens pulling 500 boats left the Acadiana Mall in Lafayette in the early morning and headed to New Orleans with a police escort from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department. The flotillia of trucks pulling boats stretched over FIVE miles. This citizen rescue group was organized by La. State Senator, Nick Gautreaux from Vermilion Parish. The group was comprised of experienced boaters, licensed fishermen and hunters, people who have spent their entire adult life and teenage years on the waterways of Louisiana.

The State Police waved the flotillia of trucks/boats through the barricades in LaPlace and we sped into New Orleans via I-10 until past the airport and near the Clearview exit. At that time we were stopped by agents of the FEMA controlled La. Dept. of Wildlife & Fisheries. A young DWF agent strolled through the boats and told approximately half of the citizens that their boats were too large because the water had dropped during the night and that they should turn around and go home...

Fearing riots, Guard rejects food airdrops

NEW ORLEANS, Sept 3 (Reuters) - People left homeless by Hurricane Katrina told horrific stories of rape, murder and trigger-happy guards in two New Orleans centers that were set up as shelters but became places of violence and terror.

Police and National Guard troops on Saturday closed down the two centers -- the Superdome arena and the city's convention center -- but then penned in the storm victims outside in sweltering heat to keep them from trying to walk out of the city.

Hastert Tries Damage Control After Remarks Hit a Nerve

House Speaker J. In between, a former president hinted he would like to throttle the Illinois Republican.

Hastert was still reeling from reaction to his comments earlier this week about the storm-ravaged city. 'It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed,' he said in an interview with the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill. Asked whether it made sense to spend billions of dollars rebuilding a city that lies below sea level, he told the paper, 'I don't know. That doesn't make sense to me.'

Thousands of Refugees Continue to Await Help

NEW ORLEANS — Planes, trains and buses delivered refugees to safety on Saturday as the evacuation of this ruined city finally appeared to pick up steam.

Buses had evacuated most people from the frightening confines of the Superdome (search) by early morning. At the equally squalid convention center, thousands of people began pushing and dragging their belongings up the street to more than a dozen air-conditioned buses, the mood more numb than jubilant.

More than 50,000 people had been trapped for days at the two filthy, sweltering buildings, suffering from a lack of food, water or medical attention. Help came too late for a number of them — dead bodies were a common sight, in wheelchairs, wrapped in blankets or just abandoned.

Murder and mayhem in Superdome

Leroy Fouchea, 42, waited in the sweltering heat for an hour to get his ration - his first proper food since Monday - and immediately handed it over to a sickly friend.

He then offered to show reporters the dead bodies of a man in a wheelchair, a young man who he said he dragged inside just hours earlier, and the limp forms of two infants, one just four months old, the other six months old.

...

A National Guardsman refused entry.

'It doesn't need to be seen, it's a make-shift morgue in there,' he told a Reuters photographer. 'We're not letting anyone in there anymore. If you want to take pictures of dead bodies, go to Iraq.'

ABC News: Silicon Insider: Katrina and the Webs

Sept. 1, 2005 — In the midst of the mind-boggling disaster of Hurricane Katrina, we are also seeing an interesting — and unprecedented — technical phenomenon that may bode well for how we respond to these horrors in the future.

It has to do with the Internet, and what might be called 'virtual newsrooms.' And it can involve, as in the case over the last few days with Katrina, the most unlikely people. Their role suggests that in the future, the process of getting important information — and perhaps even warnings — out to the world may be more fluid and dynamic than we have ever imagined.

Salon.com News | "Looting" or "finding"? - NP

Two photographs of New Orleans residents wading through chest-deep water unleashed a wave of chatter among bloggers Wednesday about whether black people are being treated unfairly in media coverage of post-hurricane looting.

One of the images, shot by photographer Dave Martin for the Associated Press, shows a young black man wading through chest-deep waters after 'looting' a grocery store, according to the caption. The young man appears to have a case of Pepsi under one arm and a full garbage bag in tow. In the other, similar shot, taken by photographer Chris Graythen for AFP/Getty Images, a white man and a light-skinned woman are shown wading through chest-deep water after 'finding' goods including bread and soda, according to the caption, in a local grocery store.

British Columbia rescue team describes chaos in Louisiana

A Canadian search and rescue team in Louisiana says conditions on the ground are so dangerous, it has to wait for order to restore before they can get to work in the devastated hurricane region.

British Columbia's Heavy Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) left for Lafayette, La. Wednesday night after being asked by state officials for assistance.

On Thursday, the team was in Kenner, La. -- a small city of about 75,000 on the Mississippi River's East Bank -- where police described the violence and looting as 'out of control.'

USAR is working with Louisiana State Troopers, as well as the National Guard.

'It's far too dangerous for even the state troopers and police to wander out,' said USAR member Brian Inglis in a statement Thursday on his team website, vancouver.ca/usar.

'It's absolutely crazy, the devastation is unreal -- the gunfire, the shooting, the looting is like something you see in a movie.

Funding for hurricane preparedness of New Orleans

The adequacy of funding for hurricane preparedness of New Orleans has been questioned in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Since 2001, many U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requests for hurricane protection projects have been cut back or delayed. Critics charge that these cutbacks were a direct result of funding for the Iraq war and the Bush Administration's tax cuts. Others argue that it is common for projects like these to be underfunded and even had the remaining 25% of funding requests been filled, it would not have helped New Orleans withstand a category 4 hurricane. Ironically, Haley Barbour, governor of heavily affected Mississippi, was head of the Republican National Committee at the time funds for FEMA and Flood control were being cut, as well as Louisiana National Guard being sent to Iraq.

Planning, Response Are Faulted

Tens of thousands of people remain stranded on the streets of New Orleans in desperate conditions because officials failed to plan for a serious levee breach and the federal response to Hurricane Katrina was slow, according to disaster experts and Louisiana government officials.

Though experts had long predicted that the city -- which sits mostly below sea level and is surrounded by water -- would face unprecedented devastation after an immense hurricane, they said problems were worsened by a late evacuation order and insufficient emergency shelter for as many as 100,000 people.

The following is the result of an interview I just conducted via cell phone with a New Orleans citizen stranded at the Convention Center. I don't know what you're hearing in the mainstream media or in the press conferences from the city and state officials, but here is the truth:

'Bigfoot' is a bar manager and DJ on Bourbon Street, and is a local personality and icon in the city. He is a lifelong resident of the city, born and raised. He rode out the storm itself in the Iberville Projects because he knew he would be above any flood waters. Here is his story as told to me moments ago. I took notes while he talked and then I asked some questions:

Three days ago, police and national guard troops told citizens to head toward the Crescent City Connection Bridge to await transportation out of the area. The citizens trekked over to the Convention Center and waited for the buses which they were told would take them to Houston or Alabama or somewhere else, out of this area.

It's been 3 days, and the buses have yet to appear.

Although obviously he has no exact count, he estimates more than 10,000 people are packed into and around and outside the convention center still waiting for the buses. They had no food, no water, and no medicine for the last three days, until today, when the National Guard drove over the bridge above them, and tossed out supplies over the side crashing down to the ground below. Much of the supplies were destroyed from the drop. Many people tried to catch the supplies to protect them before they hit the ground. Some offered to walk all the way around up the bridge and bring the supplies down, but any attempt to approach the police or national guard resulted in weapons being aimed at them.

There are many infants and elderly people among them, as well as many people who were injured jumping out of windows to escape flood water and the like -- all of them in"
